Agriculture requires the use of various equipment to fasten up work. The process of harvesting is a tedious one that takes a lot of time. Combine or combine harvester is innovative equipment that can be used for harvesting. It is named so as it can be used to combine three different harvesting operations – reaping, threshing, and winnowing. Combine concaves play a key role in the working of a combine. It is a part of the combine harvester used for specific functions.

    What is a combine concave?

Combine concaves refer to the trough, which is an essential component in the combine harvester. To understand what a combine concave is, the working of this equipment needs to be understood. The combine has a front part known as the reel that pulls the grain stalk and pushes it inside the machine. The grain stalks are then moved up on a conveyer belt to the threshing cylinder. This is one of the main components of the machine.

The cylinder rotates over the concave at high speed. As this process continues, the grain kernels and the stalk heads get separated. The hay is then separated and the kernels fall through the slits that are provided in the concave. Below the concave is a grain pan. It vibrates and has sieves that ensure chaff and other material are removed and the grain kernels are moved into the grain tank.

As can be seen, combine concaves are essential in the process of threshing and separating. At the time of threshing, the concave helps in removing the seeds and separating them from the stalks. In the separation process, the seeds are separated from the chaff and other material and sent to the grain tank. The effectiveness of the entire process depends on the wiring pattern of the concave and also its clearance distance.

    Managing the concave

Combine concaves need to be managed to ensure the entire process goes on perfectly well. There is space between the rotating cylinder and the concave. This ensures a smooth flow of material. It is important to set the space correctly. Providing too much of space will not allow the grains to separate from the stalk. If space is too less, then the stalk can get damaged. The manufacturer/dealer can help in making this setting. You may need to change this setting depending on the type of crop you harvest.

The concave types depend on the crop. You can opt for a concave with narrow wires if you are harvesting barley and wheat. The grains here are small and the slits need to be narrow. Wide-wired concaves are also available. They are perfectly suited for harvesting corn and beans, as the seeds are larger and need more space to fall through.

The combine concave is an important component of the combine harvester. Different types are available in the market that can be used depending on the usage of the combine. You can get the type you want based on the crops that you grow in your field.
